We have collated a small selection of the many hadith on Masjid Al-Aqsa below for you to read and revel in joy at hearing about this unique mosque and it's blessed surroundings.

Better than the world

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘What an amazing place of worship it is! Surely, there will soon come a time when, for a man to have land equivalent to his horse’s rope - from which he can see Bait al-Maqdis - will be better for him than the whole world!’ (The narrator said, ‘or he ﷺ said, “Better for him than the world and everything in it!“’)

[Hakim]

Pray in Masjid al-Aqsa, or send gifts

Maymunah reported: She said, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, tell us about the Sacred House in Jerusalem.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “It is the land of the gathering and the Resurrection. Go there and pray, for one prayer in it is like a thousand prayers elsewhere.” She said, “What if I cannot endure travel to there?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Let one send a gift of oil to light its lamps, for whoever does so is as if he has gone there.”

Direction of prayer changed

Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه‎ reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray towards the Sacred House in Jerusalem, then it was revealed to him, “We have certainly seen you turning your face to the heaven. We will surely turn you to a direction of prayer that will please you. Turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque,” (2:144). A man from the tribe of Salimah passed those who were bowing in dawn prayer, having finished one cycle. The man announced, “Indeed, the direction of prayer has been has been changed!” They moved their direction while in that state.

The dua of Prophet Sulaiman عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ

The Prophet ﷺ  said, ’When Sulaiman bin Dawud عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ finished building Bait al-Maqdis, he asked Allah for three things: judgement that was in harmony with His judgement, a dominion that no one would have after him, and that no one should come to this masjid, intending only to pray in it, except that he would emerge free of sin, like the day his mother gave birth to him’.

Then the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘As for (the first) two (supplications), they were granted, and I hope that the third was also granted’. [Ibn Majah]

Sins are forgiven

Abdullah ibn Amr رضي الله عنه‎ reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When Sulaiman عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, son of David عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, built the Sacred House, he asked Allah Almighty for the three things throughout. Sulaiman عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ asked Allah Almighty for judgment coinciding with His judgment, and he was given it. Sulaiman عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ asked Allah Almighty for a kingdom none would have after him, and he was given it. And Sulaiman عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ asked Allah Almighty when he finished the foundations of the Mosque that none would come to it, intending only to pray, but that his sins would be expunged like the day he was born from his mother.”

The Second Masjid

Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه‎ reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the first mosque placed on the earth. The Prophet said, “It was the Sacred Mosque.” I asked, “Then which one?” The Prophet said, “The furthest mosque in Jerusalem.” I said, “How long was between them?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Forty years, then the earth was made a mosque for you. Wherever the time for prayer reaches you, then pray there.”
